Potem je z možem leta 2016 kupila dober hektar zemlje pod Obočnico v Zgornjih Gorjah in zasadila sadike z nekdanje priljubljene družinske Vrtnarije Reš v Mošnjah. Programme 2024

21th gathering of poets, critics and translators of poetry

2 July – 6 July 2024

Rogaška Slatina, Ljubljana

The program of the Pranger Festival 2024 includes reflections on nine poetry collections from 2023, a conceptual discussion on Poetry & Humor, an international discussion called Lyrikbook, the awarding of the Stritar Prize for critics, and a children’s program called ELA – Little Pranger. The direction of the festival focuses on the dignity of art and the reception of art, inclusiveness, and trans-clan openness. The aim is to express opinions kindly and directly while also fearlessly considering the heard criticism, which should be well-founded and polite. Pranger selects three critics, who each choose three poets, authors of new poetry collections.

All critical debates will be hosted by Diana Pungeršič.

Saturday, May 25, 2024, Cultural Center, Rogaška Slatina, 11:00 AM

Ceremonial awarding of the ELA – Little Pranger competition prizes. In partnership with the Rogaška Slatina Library. Program director: Nataša Koražija,

Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Vodnik Homestead Center, 7:00 PM
Conceptual discussion: Poetry & Humor

Guests: Andreja Štepec and Blaž Iršič. Moderator: Ajda Bračič.

Is it worthwhile to take humorous poetry seriously? How seriously can we take witty poets? How deep do the mechanisms of humor reach between verses, is absurdity even funny, and with what power does satire wield its critical edge today?

Humor is a convincing yet delicate literary tool that, like in life, not everyone masters completely. In times of global and personal crises, it can be the last line of defense against despair or a strategy for guerrilla testing of optimistic alternatives.

Foreign language in focus: Italian

No one reads as meticulously as avid readers. Poetry allows for its rewritings and new conceptualizations of the world. In the year 2024, Pranger is focusing on discussing the relationship of Italian language towards Slovenian poetry and deepening the relevant, and transformative connections between the languages.

The Stritar Award for Critics 2024

For the eleventh year in a row, we will be hosting the Slovene Writers’ Association, which will present this year’s Stritar Award for Critics at the concluding festival event on Friday, 5 July 2024 in Rogaška Slatina’s Cultural Centre.

Critique studio

Young Critique and Translation Critique are two mentored workshops for beginner critics (non-beginners also welcome) that will be held at the festival in autumn.

ELA- Little Pranger

ELA-Little Pranger workshop is dedicated to our youngest readers who will be able to participate in a children’s poetry competition. Like last year, the workshop is part of a collaboration with Cultural Centre Rogaška Slatina and is held separately from the critical part of the festival.

Books in Clothing

Pranger’s chosen books will be treated to an artistic book cover transformation with the help of the Books in Clothing project, a collaboration of our festival with MKC Maribor and Maribor’s Slovenian Book Days Festival.

Join us, the entrance is free!

This event is part of the reading culture programme co-financed by the Slovenian Book Agency.

Pranger Translat 2022

The only Slovenian festival dedicated exclusively to the translation of fiction and the humanities brings new debates, fresh linguistic combinations and a focus on the art of translation that has not yet been highlighted.

The Translation Pranger Festival will take place between October 2022 and January 2023 on Monday evenings at the Maribor Puppet Theatre.

This year, we will focus on translations of Canadian fiction from French, translations of classic works of Spanish literature, and award-winning Hungarian authors translated into a range of languages, as well as Slovenian.

We invite you to join us for festival discussions and to mingle with our exceptional guests!

(Sodobnost International, 2006, 258 pp.)

Nicolas Dickner: Six Degrees of Freedom
(Modernity International, 2022, 287 pp.)
(Six degrés de liberté, Éditions Alto, Quebec, 2015)

The rest of the programme will be announced shortly.

A free ride from Ljubljana

Please write to prevodni.pranger@pranger.si, to secure your seat in the van, leaving Ljubljana at 15.45 on October 24th, from the Train Station.

We are back

With the exception of one event, this year’s festival evenings will take place mainly at the Maribor Puppet Theatre with only one online streaming, so don’t miss all of them!

Face to face

The Translation Pranger festival management selects one foreign language for each talk and a selector who puts the focus of the evening on two books or journal/radio publications by a translator that he or she feels should be highlighted. The selector uses his/her independent judgement, but takes into account the manageability of the material in terms of scope (including for the audience, for whom it is desirable to read the material before the event), and uses a variety of selection approaches. The selector and the discussant(s) come face to face to explain their opinions to the creator of the translation, who has the opportunity to peek into his/her own translation workshop and to reveal lesser-known facts or textual passages that the discussants may have interpreted in their own way.

Translation Pranger is organised by KUD Pranger with the support of the Municipality of Maribor and the Slovenian Book Agency JAK, and in cooperation with the Maribor Puppet Theatre, the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Maribor, the Maribor Library, the Hungarian Liszt Institute (Liszt Intézet – Magyar Kulturális Központ Ljubljana) and the Italian Cultural Institute (Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Lubiana).

Programme 2021

18th gathering of poets, critics and translators of poetry

31 August – 6 September 2021

Rogaška Slatina, Ljubljana

Pranger Festival will give poetry lovers and readers plenty to look forward to with their 2021 programme. Audiences will be able to enjoy a reflection of nine poetry collections published in 2020 and attend The Stritar Award for Young Critics ceremony. Children will be able to participate in the ELA-Little Pranger workshop and adults interested in translation will have the opportunity to join a workshop dedicated to translating poetry from Slovene into German (Frankfurt 2023).

This year’s festival will exceptionally be held at the end of the summer season.

At the heart of the Pranger Festival lie the dignity and reception of art. When faced with a poet, how to tell one’s opinion politely and with good intentions as well as solid arguments, and on the other hand, fearlessly reflect upon the received critique? How to translate poetry and take a road less travelled?

Pranger Festival chooses three literary critics who select three authors with newly published poetry collections. All critical debates will be hosted by the 2017 Stritar Award winner Maja Šučur.

Programme 2019

Programme

At the heart of the festival Pranger lie the dignity of art and reception of art. When faced with the poet, how to tell one’s opinion politely and with good intentions as well as solid arguments, and on the other hand, to fearlessly reflect upon the received critique? How to translate poetry and take a road less traveled?

Festival Pranger selects three literary critics and each one of them selects three authors, who published poetry collections in the year before, thus highlighting a total of nine contemporary poetry collections.

Selection 2019

Festival Pranger, a gathering of poets, critics and translators of poetry, motivates readers to read and reflect in depth upon nine poetry collections with unconventional poetics, that were published in the year before. Pranger’s critics Barbara KorunAljaž Koprivnikar and Domen Slovinič have decided to put in focus of the festival’s 2019 programme the works of Alenka JovanovskiKlarisa JovanovićMilan ŠeljMaja MiloševičAndreja ŠtepecEsad BabačićVarja Balžalorsky AntićKaja Teržan in Jure Jakob.

Language in focus: Albanian

The same as goes for critics, goes for translators of poetry from Slovene to other languages – poet’s co-authors. They have the chance to meet the poet, while trying to transplant verses from one culture and reality to another.

This year, we’ve shone a light on the Albanian language and together with our translators we will weave new relations with the target culture. Poetry of Pranger’s chosen poets 2019 was translated into standard Albanian by the experienced translator Nikollë Berishaj, participant of a round table, taking place on Friday, 14 June 2019 in Rogaška Slatina.

Stritar’s Award for Young Critics

For the seventh year in the row, we hosted Slovene Writers’ Association, that presented Stritar’s Award for Young Critics at the concluding festival event on Saturday, 15 June 2019 at 8 PM in the Cultural Centre Rogaška Slatina. In 2018, the award was presented to Diana Pungeršič. 2019’s recipient was Martina Potisk.

ELA – Pranger for the Young

The youngest readers amoung us can benefit from the programme ELA, which for the first time took place separately from the main festival’s programme on 25 May 2019, in a tight collaboration with Library of Rogaška Slatina. Young poets wereinvited to participate in a Primary School Poetry Competition, open for entries from 12 February until 29 March 2019. All entries were graded independently by school triads. On Saturday, 25 May, families with their children and children’s menthors were invited to the award ceremony with accompanying literary programme for children and a banquet in Rogaška Slatina. The head of the programme ELA is mag. Nataša Koražija, director of Library of Rogaška Slatina.

Young Critique

Critics-beginners (you don’t have to be young to participate in this programme!) were invited to participate in a workshop, menthored by Maja Šučur, awardee of Stritar’s award for Young Critics 2017. Translation critics-beginners participated in a workshop led by Urška P. Černe. They all presented their work on a separate evening in Ljubljana on 12 June 2019.
