Ana Grmek, born in 1980 in Ljubljana, graduated in German and English studies from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana in 2005. After obtaining the status of a self-employed cultural worker, she began her cooperation with RTV Slovenia, for which she still regularly produces subtitled translations of films, TV series and documentaries from German and English. She is a regular contributor to Radio Slovenia, where she selects and translates extracts from German and English literature for the third programme Ars. In recent years, she has also been preparing translations of cartoon series as part of the children’s and youth programme of RTV Slovenia. Since 2011, she has been cooperating with the Slovenian Cinematheque with translations of German and English films. In 2019, she received an award from the Slovenian association of television and film translators for an outstanding achievement in the category of drama series.
Despite her intensive work in subtitle translation, Ana Grmek has also been translating prose since 2006. Her translations include several works of children’s literature (mainly by the Austrian author Christine Nöstlinger) and works for adults (e.g. Pascal Mercier Nachtzug nach Lissabon, Karl-Markus Gauß Im Wald der Metropolen, Michael Köhlmeier Zwei Herren am Strand, Gottfried Keller Kleider machen Leute). Her most recent literary translation is Katya Petrowska’s Vielleicht Esther.
