Novica Novaković (1965) lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the town where he was born. He graduated Law at the University of Ljubljana in 1989. He is a member of Slovene Writers’ Association.
Under the influence of French surrealists the first two collections of poems came into being Stretch Tattoo (award “Goran for young poets”) and Mirage or Cancan of a Clown, published in the early 1990’s. From reading the American poets, primarily two collections came about, collections where he leaned on the tradition of the beatniks and on the long verse – Seduction and Headless Horsemen. The first is somewhat more lyrical, addressing the woman and trying to seduce her, while in the second collection there is already more engagement and social criticism. After two books with short, mainly lyrical poems (Little Things and Yellow, Green, Blue, Brown) appeared his last book with significant title XXI from the end of 2015 which represents a return to the longer verse.
And when the words run out, then he writes poems for children. Sometimes he tries to be witty and sometimes he tries to get them thinking. Sometimes surprise them, at other times scare them, and still at other times offer them something »disgusting«, which they especially like. In the picture book, Some Really Real Ones there are poems about animals, while The Thing is a longer spooky poem. The collection Horrible Biba Poems Flogs is witty and playful, the collection Who Is the Daredevil is so disgusting that disgust and horror simply ooze out of it.
Or he might seek refuge in rock and punk rock and writes a song or two there. His poems are translated in many languages. In December 2015, when he celebrated his 50th birthday, came out an eBook of his selected poems called – 50 The Best Of (until now).
