Nikollë Berishaj

Nikollë Berishaj, poet, writer, translator (3 December 1958, Tuz, Montenegro). Father Noš Berishaj, worker, mother Tone Berishaj, born Camay.

After elementary school in Tuzla (1965-73), he attended a gymnasium (1973-77) in the same town, then studied at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana, and graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Pristina. At the elementary school Prežihov Voranc in Ljubljana, he was employed as a teacher of mathematics and physics (1981-86). In 1989, he returned to Tuz where he worked as a teacher of mathematics and informatics.

In 1980-81, he was the editor-in-chief of the Stik magazine, published by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana, and the newspaper Stej, by the students of Electrical Engineering of Yugoslavia.

He translates mainly from Slovene to Albanian and from Albanian to Slovene, as well as from Croatian and Serbian into Albanian. In addition to independent editions, he translated several songs and (passages) of prose works from Slovene into Albanian and vice versa for magazines, anthologies and various collections.

In 2013, he received the Pretnar Prize for translation work – the Ambassador of Slovene Literature and Language and Slavic Cultures.

He is important for the Slovene cultural space as a translator from Slovene to Albanian and from Albanian into Slovene and as author of pocket Albanian-Slovene and Slovene-Albanian dictionary.
